Perhaps your dad should see a foot doctor aka as a Podiatrist.
Hi, sounds approaching nail fungal to me . Best to be sure though by getting your Dad to shift and visit his Doctor.
If it is a fastener fungal , it is treated by a course of antibiotics over about a 3 month term , maybe longer contained by your Fathers case LOL. As he's have it for a long time, may require longer treatment.
My husband had it for a long time as in good health, though not as long as your Fathers! He went and saw his Doctor and that be what was prescribed after they took staple clippings for biopsy.
Tell your Dad to be careful though, coz if it get infected, can be very insecure .
Hope this has help :)
